IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE OUTLASTS CANDOR, 40-30 (2019-02-05)

Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR - Candor said thank you and farewell to Searra Allen, Emily Henry, Jennifer Hopkins and Paedyn Whitmore, on Senior Night Tuesday. Unfortunately for the Indians, they were unable to send the quartet off with a victory.

In an IAC South Small School duel which was tight most of the way, S-VE emerged with a 40-30 win over its neighboring rival.

"We had to fight really hard to get this win," said S-VE head coach Abby Gentile. "Our rebounding was the difference in the game. We can limit teams to one shot we do well and they did a great job tonight going after the ball."

The Panthers set the stage early, jumping out to a 6-2 lead before the Indians' Jennah Kareem reeled them back in with a 3-pointer. A trey from Paige Grube would give S-VE a 9-7 edge after a quarter.

Madelynn Pasto, scoreless in the opening period, put up five of her team-high 11 points in the second to offset four more from Kareem and S-VE would take a 16-14 advantage into halftime.

Kareem tossed in six more points in the third quarter while Abbie Kellogg matched that number for the Panthers, and Candor would trim the lead to 24-23 heading into the final frames.

S-VE's offense would come to life in the fourth quarter to put up 16 points. Pasto tacked on six more points, going 4-for-4 at the free throw line, while Sam Deppe added five points, including trey, to lead the charge. Meanwhile, the Panthers held the home team in check with the exception of Braelyn Hornick. She scored all seven Candor points in the fourth quarter.

Kellogg contributed eight points, five rebounds and two steals; Ava Bruehwiler scored five points, grabbed seven boards and had three steals; Grube added five points, eight boards, two assists and one block; Madi Sousa had two points and two assists; Deppe had five points; Pasto added two steals; and Hannah Harmon and Tara Perkins had two points each.

Hornick posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Kareem put up a game-high 13 points, and Allen chipped in two points, 13 rebounds and seven steals. Brooke Wilcox and Kilie Streeter added two points each.

Candor hosts Edison Thursday.
