IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY RALLY COMES UP SHORT (2019-02-05)

Tioga County Sports Report
ELMIRA HEIGHTS - Newark Valley's fourth-quarter rally came up short as the Cardinals lost to Edison, 54-53, here Tuesday.

The Spartans put NV in a 17-8 hole in the first quarter and built a 32-20 advantage at intermission.

"We were down 20 in the second quarter," NV head coach Scott Stratton said. "We came out like two polar opposite teams. They came out with lots of energy and knocked down shots, and we came out flat and missed chippies.

"The sense of urgency finally kicked in about mid-third quarter and we were defensively a ball of fire. But it was just too late."

The Cardinals were only able to get one point back in the third period and doubled up Edison, 18-9, in the fourth.

"(Jack) Shaw made both ends of a one-and-one with nine seconds to go to put them up four," Stratton said. "Kyle (Coffin) hit a three from half court with three seconds left and they ran out the clock without inbounding it."

Donavin Beebe led NV with 13 points, Kyle Coffin scored 11 and Riley Malone tallied 10. Jason Graham, Andrew Obregon and Ethan Bigelow added seven, six and five points, respectively.

Shaw led the Spartans with 22 points.

Newark Valley hosts Notre Dame Thursday.
