SOUTHPORT, N.Y. - Newark Valley stumbled early, but regrouped quickly to defeat Notre Dame, 63-47, in IAC South Large School action here Thursday.

The Cardinals managed just six points in the first quarter, falling behind, 17-6, then lit up the scoreboard for 23 in the next stanza.

Bri Beebe and Gracie Gardner scored six points each, and Hannah Ferguson chalked up five more in the second-period resurgence. NV attacked the net for four 3-pointers - two from Beebe, and one apiece by Ferguson and Mackenna Nechwedowich.

The Cardinal defense would hold ND to nine points in each of the second and third quarters to build leads of 29-26 and 45-35.

Beebe, Ferguson and Allie Wandell contributed one trey each in the third quarter, and Ferguson added one more in the final period.

Nechewedowich scored eight points in the fourth quarter and Fergusion had four more, giving NV four players in double figures. Nechwedowich ended up with a double-double, scoring a team-high 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. She also dished out five assists. Ferguson had 13 points and three steals, Beebe tallied a dozen points and grabbed five steals, and Gardner had 10 points, seven boards and three assists.

Tessa Nechwedowich contributed seven points and seven boards, Wandell chipped in with three points, six rebounds and three steals, Kendra Morris scored two points and had three steals, and Liz Ferguson added two points.
