SECTION IV WRESTLING: TIOGA COUNTY'S 6 TOP SEEDS ADVANCE TO DIVISION II SEMIS (22 PHOTOS) (2019-02-08)

WINDSOR, N.Y. - Tioga County's six top-seeded grapplers have guaranteed themselves spot on the podium at the Section IV Division II Wrestling Champion ships, each advancing to the semifinals during Friday's action here.

Newark Valley's Trentyn Rupert and Tioga's John Worthing had just one match apiece, each winning by fall in the quarterfinals. Rupert disposed of eighth-seeded Jacob Marshall from Unatego /Unadilla Valley one minute at 285 pounds while Worthing decked Norwich's Joey Marvin, also a No. 8 seed, in 59 seconds at 139.

Rupert will meet Tioga's fourth-seeded Stephen Taylor in the semis, which begin at 10 a.m. Worthing takes on the fifth seed, Chenango Valley's Nathan Lehr.

Owego's Cam Bundy (170) and SVEC's Matt Mullen (182) had a little tougher road to the semis.

Bundy pinned Josh Beckley of OM / WG in 3:11, then edged Windsor's Dave Flora, the eighth seed, 5-3.

Mullen surged late in his match to post an 8-3 victory against Tioga's Dom Wood before scoring a 17-1 technical fall over Dakota Hall of Norwich in 3:50.

In the semis, Bundy wrestles Chenango Valley's Nate Alyward, the fourth seed, and Mullen goes up against M-E's fifth-seeded Roman Jellick.

Tioga's other two top seeds, Brady Worthing (132) and Austin Lamb (145) scored two pins apiece.

Worthing pinned Damien Hitt of Greene / Oxford in 41 seconds, then took care of Windsor's Deekon Flint in 3:08. In the semis, he faces fourth-seeded Sam Dow of Dryden.

Lamb collected his 200th career victory with a fall over SVEC's Alex Morse in 5:38, then pinned No. 8 Collin Haag of OM / WG in 1:29. He will take on fourth-seeded Matt McKewin-Bates of Dryden in the semis.

Here's how the rest of the Tioga County wrestlers fared on day one and what's in store for them during day two of sectionals.

99 pounds: Fifth-seeded Matt Laubach drew a first-round bye, then decisioned No. 4 Max Norris of Norwich, 6-3. He meets top-seeded Joey Florence of BGAH in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, Tioga teammates Caden Bellis and Gianni Silvestri square off for a spot in the finals.

113: SVEC's Ousmane Duncanson, the No. 7 seed, pinned Dryden's Miles Counch in 2:42 before falling to second-seeded Kyle Willard of Groton, 10-2. He faces the winner of NV's Andrew Post and Sidney's Adrian Karkowski in a second-round wrestleback.

Tioga's Mason Welch, the fourth seed, faces top-seeded Cody Merwin of Walton / Delhi in the semis. Welch pinned Post in 1:36, then blanked No. 5 Dylan Decker of BGAH, 7-0.

120: Garrett Skeens is off to an impressive start. The No. 4 seed at 120, he pinned Keagan Bacon of Sidney in 2:42 and Ryan Kennedy of Windsor in 1:59. He meets No. 1 seed Caleb Robinson of W / D in the semis.

Teammate Rylan LaForest dropped his opener to Kennedy, 13-1. He meets Bacon in a first-round wrestleback with the victor taking on Tioga's Justin Hopkins.

Hopkins, the seventh seed, opened with a pin of Edison's Jordan Taylor in 3:36 before suffering a fall in 1:35 to Norwich's second-seeded Nick Glanville.

126: Owego's Avery Middendorf, the No. 4 seed, worked a pair of 2-point decisions. He shut out Sidney's Caleb hurtle, 2-0, and turn  away fifth-seeded Brady Smith of Greene / Oxford, 6-4.

SVEC's Hunter Cleveland lost to Windsor's third-seeded Mike McDaniels by fall in 2:58. He wrestles Groton's Tanner Karshner in a first-round wrestleback.

Waverly's Colby Sindoni, the sixth seed, pinned Karshner in 2:38, then dropped a 5-2 decision to McDaniels. He meets the winner of OM / WG's Andrew Hartford and Dryden's RJ Belanger in a second-round wrestleback.

Second-seeded David MacWhinnie advanced to the semis with a pair of falls. He dispatched NV's Mark Vosburg in 3:44 and decked Whitney Point's Brennan Roe in 5:20. MacWhinnie tangles with McDaniels in the semis.

132: Third-seeded Parker Sexton of SVEC pinned Nash Vincent of Marathon in 3:59, then scored a 10-0 victory over Owego's Andrew Laubach.  He will wrestle No. 2 Zach Harrington of Sidney in the semis.

Laubach, the sixth seed, pinned NV's Mike Post in 50 seconds.  Laubach faces the winner of Hitt and OM / WG's Josiah Lynch in a  second-round wrestleback while Post meets Vincent in a first-round wrestleback.

145: Owego's Zach Miner lost to McKewin-Bates by fall in 1:34 and will meet BGAH's Brady Buttice in a first-round wrestleback.

Morse faces Whitney Point's Jordan Caniff in a first-round wrestleback.

152: Third-seeded Hayden Lewis got put to his back late in their preliminary match by Owego's Austin Culver before prevailing, 8-5. Culver and Dryden's Braedon Libbey meet in a first-round wrestleback

SVEC's Devin Beach gave fourth-seeded Tony Giovagnoli of Oneonta a scare early in their first-round bout before falling, 11-5. He takes on Marathon's Larry Barned in a first-round wrestleback.

Waverly's eighth-seeded Austin Kimble pinned W / D's Skyler Pesout in 2:20 before dropping a 17-0 technical fall to top-seeded Mikey Squires of Norwich.  Kimble meets the winner of Culver and Libbey in a second-round wrestleback.

Tioga's Emmett Wood, the sixth seed, pinned Libbey in 4:36, then upset Lewis, 8-2. He goes at it with No. 2 seed Reese Lockwood of Groton in the semis.

160: Fifth-seeded Cameron Carrier of Newark Valley pinned M-E's Shamus McGuire in 3:15, then upended No. 4 seed Zac Warner of Tioga in overtime, 4-2.  In the semis, Carrier meets top-seeded Shane Hoover of BGAH, the lone unbeaten wrestler in Section IV.  

Warner, who won his opener with a 10-0 major decision over Killian Prentice of Whitney Point, faces the winner of U / UV's Travis Knapp and Marathon's Dan McDonald in a second-round wrestleback.

NV' second entry, Connor Jacobson was seeded eight and won his first bout with a wild 18-10 decision over Dryden's Vincent Scott. He lost to Hoover by pin in 1:16 and will face Waverly's Trevor Meyers or Sidney's sixth-seeded Dan Calkins in a second-round wrestleback.

Meyers dropped his opener to third-seeded Brady Hope of CV by pin in 2:54.

Owego's Kaden Russell, the seventh seed, pinned Knapp in 1:09, then fell to No. 2 seed Gabe Monroe of Windsor by fall in 3:36. He meets McGuire or Prentice in a second-round wrestleback.

170: Tioga's unseeded Vinny Sullivan pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the night. He took down Windsor's seventh-seeded Noah Yadlosky with two seconds remaining in the one-minute overtime period of their first-round bout to score a 5-3 sudden victory. Sullivan lost in the quarters to No. 2 Austin Eggleston by fall in 4:58 and will face W / D's Scotty Barnhart in a second-round wrestleback.

182: Owego's fourth-seeded James Bundy bested Edison's Antonio Steinhauer, 6-1, but lost to Jellick, 10-0. He meets Oneonta's Trey Lambrecht or Moravia's Tryston Morris in a second-round wrestleback.

Waverly's Gage Tedesco, the sixth seed, was knocked off by  W /D's Kaiden Vernold, 7-6 in overtime. He takes on Trevor Harrington of Sidney in a first-round wrestleback.

Wood faces Windsor's Brandon Butler in a second-round wrestleback.

195: SVEC's second-seeded Dell Davis scored a pair of pins to advance to the semis. He spent less than a minute on the mat as he dispatched CV's Elton Richards-Follette in 23 seconds and decked seventh-seeded Greg Davis of M-E in 21 seconds. he faces Susquehanna valley third-seeded Trevor Frable in the semis.

Owego's fifth-seeded Tyler Benjamin averted a near-disaster to advance past NV's fourth-seeded Josh Duke, using a controversial, yet perfectly legal injury timeout en route to a 14-9 quarterfinal win. Both wrestlers opened the tournament with impressive pins, Benjamin in 1:05 over Oneonta's Jaden Bellissimo and Duke in 34 seconds against Dryden's Nate Hollenbeck. Benjamin will face top-seeded Nate Kennedy of G / O in the semis and Duke meets the winner of BGAH's Rocco Arduini and Richards-Follette in a second-round wrestleback.

Tioga's Joe Lloyd lost to sixth-seeded Brandon Snyder of Edison by fall in 4:31 and will meet W / D's Kaylieb Stanton in a first-round wrestleback.

220: NV's fourth-seeded Joey Woodmansee edged CV's fifth-seeded Shane Follette, 4-3, in the quarters. He takes on Oneonta's Richard Serafin, the No. 1 seed, in the semis.

SVEC's sixth-seeded Jacob Campolito pinned M-E's Garrett Ellis in 26 second, then lost to Windsor's third-seeded Collin Tidwell, by a  16-0 tech. fall in 4:33. He meets the winner of Sidney's Justin Santiago and Waverly's Trent Skeens in a second-round wrestleback.

Skeens dropped his first-round match to Deposit / Hancock's  eighth-seeded Evan Kenyon by fall in 1:14.

285: In one of the deepest weight classes of the tournament, Taylor started his night with a 31-second fall over M-E's Jeff Snover. He followed that up with a 3-0 decision against Sus Valley's Connor Cleary.

Wrestlebacks will begin at 9 a.m. with the semifinals being held on two mats starting at 10 a.m.  The championship finals are slated to begin at 5 p.m.
