SECTION IV BOYS BASKETBALL: S-VE SEEDED 1ST, CANDOR 15TH FOR CLASS C PLAYOFFS (2019-02-14)

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER / CANDOR - A potential showdown between two of the top teams in the IAC could take place in the quarterfinals of the Section IV Class C boys basketball playoffs.

S-VE (15-3) has drawn the top seed, but a possible clash with Newfield (13-7) looms early in the tournament.

The ninth-seeded Trojans defeated S-VE in an IAC South Small School tie-breaker Wednesday, 66-52, and has won two of three meetings between the two this season. Both teams won on their home courts.

However, the Trojans lost a regular season game to No. 8 Notre Dame (11-7), which handed Newfield one of its two league setbacks this season. Those two teams meet in the first round Wednesday at Southport at 6 p.m. The winner heads to Spencer Feb. 23 to face the Panthers at 6 p.m.

Two other Tioga County teams have qualified for the tournament. On Wednesday at 6 p.m., No. 15 Candor (9-11) heads to No. 2 Moravia (16-3) and No. 11 Tioga (11-9) will visit No. 6 Watkins Glen (13-5).

Other first-round games, also set for Wednesday at 6 p.m., include No. 12 Union Springs (11-8) at No. 5 Delhi (12-8), No. 13 Sidney (8-8) at No. 4 Unadilla Valley (13-5), No. 14 Oxford (7-12) at No. 3 Lansing (13-5) and No. 10 Walton (13-5) at No. 7 Greene (13-5).

The quarterfinals will be held Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. at the higher seeds. The semifinals will take place at SUNY Cortland Feb. 27 at times to be determined. The championship game will be held at SUNY Cortland March 2 at 3 p.m.
