NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley’s Jake Armstrong fired a no-hitter to lead the Cardinals to a 5-0 IAC non-league victory over Candor here Wednesday.

The sophomore, whose great-grandfather was a standout on the mound for NV back in the 1950s, struck out 18 and walked four. He faced 24 batters, throwing a little over 100 pitches in the process.

“He had good stuff,” Candor head coach Cliff Pierce said. “I haven’t seen a kid throw a knuckleball. He threw a really nice knuckleball. His breaking ball was good and he had velocity on his fastball. He threw a really nice game.”

“Defensive-wise, Jake threw a heck of a game for us today,” said NV head coach Tim Pisarczyk. “(He) started out ahead a lot, battled back when he did get in a hole, and it was just a great game with him on the mound today.”

Following a lead-off walk to the Indians’ Daniel Thomas, Armstrong retired nine straight batters, eight by strikeout, before issuing a base on balls to Brandon Hoyt to start the fourth.

In between, the Valley plated three runs in the second and two more in the third.

Sam Durand singled to start the bottom of the second, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on Brenton Rosenburg’s triple down the right field line. He stole home when Candor made a play on Ivan Aylesworth, who made a delayed steal of second following a walk. Aylesworth tallied on Riley Malone’s groundout to second to make it 3-0.

Prior to the scoring, the Indians’ Jaikob Avery made a nice play from right, throwing to Kamden Peters at the plate to get Mikey Wandell attempting to score from second.

Joey Woodmansee and Rosenburg smacked singles in the third while Durand reached on an error by the shortstop in between. Rosenberg’s hit to center field scored Woodmansee and Durand, pushing the NV advantage to 5-0.

Armstrong would set down 10 straight batters from the fourth to seventh innings before walking Brayden Ferris with one away in the seventh. Ferris would steal second and reach third on a passed ball. With two down, Peters would walk, but Rosenburg would throw to shortstop Kyle Coffin to get Peters trying to steal second.

“We didn’t swing the bat today. We watched a lot of third strikes,” said Pierce. “We’re a better hitting team than that. We’ve shown that. We’ll keep working at it.”

Austin took the loss for Candor, scattering five hits and three walks over five innings. he struck out nine. Ferris pitched the sixth, retiring the side with two Ks.

“Not as good as we usually do,” Pisarczyk said of NV’s hitting. “Some of my top hitters didn’t do too well today. A couple guy in the top of the order didn’t hit as well, but the kids at the bottom of the order picked them up and overall we scored enough runs to win the game.”

Durand and Rosenburg each went 2-for-3 for NV, and Woodmansee was 1-for-3.

NV (5-2, 4-2 Division 3) hosts Whitney Point (0-4, 0-4 Division 3) at 4:30 p.m. today. Candor (1-3, 1-2 Division 1) will visit Groton (0-3, 0-3 Division 1) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for a doubleheader.
