NEWARK VALLEY - Waverly let a 10-point first-half lead get away, but regrouped to turn away a determined Newark Valley team, 49-46, in IAC South Large School action here Tuesday.

The Wolverines' Sydney Tomasso scored eight of her game-high 24 points and Wendi Hammond added five of her 19 in a 13-10 fourth-quarter surge to break a 36-36 deadlock.

Waverly looked strong early its season opener, running out to a 7-0 lead. NV cut the gap to 9-7 and was down, 11-8, when the Wolverines tried to break the game open with a 6-0 run to close out the quarter.

Mackenna Nechwedowich put up six points and the Cardinals went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the second quarter to close the gap to 24-18 at halftime. Waverly made just two baskets in the period, 3-pointers by Sydney Tomasso and Paige Lewis.

The Cardinals outscored Waverly, 18-12, in the third quarter to knot the score at 36. Four different NV players - Hannah Ferguson, Mackenna Nechwedowich, Gracie Gardner and Tressa Nechwedowich - accounted for four points apiece to highlight the rally. Meanwhile, Hammond prevented her team from giving up the lead by scoring eight points in the period, going 6-for-6 at the stripe.

The Wolverines would lose senior Alex Tomasso to an ankle injury early in the game. She did not return.

Mackenna Nechwedowich would post a double-double for NV with 16 points and 13 rebounds. She also blocked five shots and handed out two assists. Bri Beebe, Gardner and Tressa Nechwedowich contributed seven points apiece. Beebe dished out three assists and Gardner grabbed five boards. Hannah Ferguson chipped in with four points and six rebounds.

Waverly (1-0, 1-0) hosts Notre Dame at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Newark Valley (1-1, 0-1) hosts Candor (1-1, 1-0) Friday at 7 p.m.
