WAVERLY - Waverly won eight of nine weight classes, including five via forfeits, to rally for a 51-36 win over short-handed Newark Valley here Wednesday night in IAC wrestling action.

"It's disappointing whenever you lose, but the kids fought hard out there," said Newark Valley coach Mike Daly. "It's tough to beat anyone with five forfeits, but they never gave up, and that's the most important part.

"It's early and we're young," he noted. "We're battling some injuries with kids on the sidelines for the season, which is going to hurt us all year.

"We expected our numbers to be down for a year, then we had two kids move away and lost four kids to injuries and other school-related issues. We also have a couple kids not here tonight due to illness.

"We only have one senior and three juniors," added Daly. "We expected some lumps this season, but it could be a little deeper than we realized."

After Newark Valley freshman Collin Rupert received a forfeit at 195 pounds to open the match, sophomore Joey Woodmansee gave the Cardinals a 12-0 lead with a first-period pin of Waverly's Hunter Rando at 220 pounds.

Three-time Section IV, Division 1 champion senior Trentyn Rupert, who finished third at States last year, kept it rolling for the Cardinals with a first-period pin of junior Trent Skeens to make it 18-0.

After forfeits to Waverly 8th-grader Connor Stotler at 99 pounds, and junior Zack Reeves at 106 pounds, NV sophomore Andrew Post fought off his back and erased a 5-1 deficit with a pin of Nick Spinner in 2:27 to give the Cardinals a 24-18 lead.

After a forfeit to freshman Dalton Manuel at 120 pounds, Waverly junior Rylan LaForest scored a quick takedown and turned freshman Noah Waterman to his back for a pin in 71 seconds to tie the match at 24-24.

Senior Colby Sindoni gave the Wolverines the lead for good with a pin of Mike Post in 3:33 in the 132-pound bout.

Forfeits to freshman Garrett Skeens at 138 pounds, and senior Cody Chandler at 145 pounds pushed Waverly's lead to 42-24.

Junior Ethan Stotler, who was 6-1 over the weekend at 145 pounds at the Mark Stephens Classic, pinned junior Noah Shiel in 4:57 at 152 pounds to clinch the win for the Wolverines.

At 160 pounds, NV freshman Connor Jacobson fell behind 4-1 early, rallied to take a 5-4 lead, then pinned sophomore Austin Kimble in 5:10.

At 170 pounds, Waverly sophomore Trevor Meyers fought off his back against sophomore Collin McCall, and used a five-point move late in the second period to take a 7-5 lead en route to a 7-6 win.

NV sophomore Cameron Carrier logged the quickest pin of the night, decking Waverly freshman Andrew Kimble in 25 seconds to end the match.

Newark Valley returns to action next Wednesday at SVEC, while Waverly, now 2-6, is at the Wyalusing Duals Saturday.
