THE SPORTS REPORTS: WAVERLY'S JOHNSON, CORNING'S FARRELL NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK' (2024-03-08)

Waverly senior Ralph Johnson won a Section IV title, and finished second in the State in a six-day span, while Corning senior Taylor Farrell won a state title, and set a Section IV record. They are The Sports Reports / Ziff Law Firm Regional “Athletes of the Week,” for the week ending March 2.

CORNING FARRELL  NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL GIRLS “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”
Farrell won a state and federation title in the 1,500-meter race walk at the NYSPHSAA Championships on Saturday.

Farrell also set a Corning school and Section IV record with her time of 6:40.09. The time was a top 10 time in New York State history and a top 15 time in U.S. high school history.

Farrell won the state meet by more than 13 seconds over the runner-up.

Honorable Mentions: Sayre’s Layla Bennett (wrestling), Wellsboro’s Makenna Robbins (swimming), Wyalusing Alysha Botts (basketball), Northeast Bradford’s Gracelyn Laudermilch (track & field), and Newark Valley’s Cha Gardner (basketball).

WAVERLY’S JOHNSON NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL BOYS “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”
On Sunday, Johnson won Section IV gold in the 55-meter dash in a school-record time of 6.41 seconds. He also ran on the 800-meter relay team that finished second, and hit the state standard with a school-record time of 1:34.14.

On Saturday, Johnson finished second at States in the 55 in 6.42 seconds. The 400-meter relay team of Johnson, and seniors Micah Chandler, Charlie Larrabee, and Nehemiah Anthony finished 16th, but once again broke the school record, clocking in at 1:32.99.
