Tioga County Sports Report
ELMIRA HEIGHTS — The Spencer-Van Etten/Candor softball team held its own against the Edison juggernaut before faltering late in an 8-1 IAC loss Friday.
The Eagles held the Spartans’ high-scoring offense scoreless through four innings, but Edison finally got the bats going in the home half of the fifth, turning a triple, two doubles, a single, two errors and a walk into a 6-0 cushion.
The Spartans tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth after SVEC plated a run.
The Eagles’ lone tally came following a Raegan Sudnikovich single and Katelyn Klym’s RBI single.
Klym also had a base hit in the first inning. Joining her with singles were Cheylee Campbell in the third and Hannah Smith in the fifth.
All-state pitcher Gabby Milazzo struck out 10 batters as Edison improved to 5-1 on the season.
The Eagles, still without Faith Brenchley and Jill Holmes, were also missing starting pitcher Roni Presher.
Aubrie Kastenhuber took the circle in her place and pitched the first 5 ⅓ innings, recording four strikeouts. Sudnikovich finished up.
SVEC travels to Whitney Point (3-1) on Monday.
